  1. Great quote! One of my favorite travel books, and one that is not well known or much read, is Stevenson’s “The Amateur Immigrant,” in which he recounts his trip from Scotland to New York to California in the late 1800s. When I was young I never imagined Stevenson setting foot in the United States, so it shocked me to find this memoir while browsing randomly at Powell’s Books in Portland.
