10 Terrible, Awful, No-Good Times to be Single

{a female perspective}

1. When there is a spider to be killed. Especially if it’s in your bedroom.

2. When you have (or think you are about to have) car trouble.

3. When you remember, see, or experience something and the first person you want to tell is the last person you dated.

4. When you’re home alone, it’s dark, and there are scary noises outside the house.

5. When you’re at the grocery store, gas station, bar, or __________[fill in the blank], and the guy hitting on you (we’ll call him HitMan) is either unable or unwilling to catch on to your disinterest.

6. When you suddenly find yourself bringing up your imaginary boyfriend to HitMan in hopes of making an escape* (I have personally “dated” an Irishman, an auto mechanic, and an accountant).

* Warning: This tactic does not always work. Sometimes it merely inspires HitMan to ask many questions about your pretend boyfriend and how long you’ve been dating in order to gauge the seriousness of the relationship and whether or not he can swoop in and steal you away, thus prolonging the awkward encounter and forcing you to tell more lies.

7. When someone you haven’t seen in a while asks if you’re dating anyone, and your answer is the same as the last time they asked: No.

8. When you find out your ex has started dating someone else before you have.

9. When you attend an event or gathering where everyone else is coupled up and you’re there alone.

10. When, despite the millions of people living in your city, you inexplicably run into HitMan. Again.

Your turn. What did I miss?

P.S. Being single ain’t all bad. Tune in tomorrow for 10 Pretty Darn Awesome Times to be Single!
